With the Leaving Cert results out today (congratulations to all) the focus now turns to finding student accommodation for the upcoming year.

With the amount of purpose built student accommodation in Dublin and elsewhere lower than the amount of students, it’s advisable to begin your search as soon as possible.

Renting for the first time can be a daunting experience.

As a way of helping with this, we’ve come up with this checklist which you can use to help navigate your way through the rental market.

If you’re looking to find accommodation, click the banner below to see what is currently available around your college.

We also have a student accommodation guide to renting which you may find helpful.

Once you’ve found a property and arranged a viewing, here is a checklist that might prove handy.

Questions to ask:

  • What is the rent?

  • What is the despoit?

  • When is the rent due each month?

  • What’s included in the rent?

  • What other bills are you to expect during your tenancy?

Things to check around the property.

Location:

  • Is the accommodation in a safe place that you feel comfortable in?

  • What type of transport is available to and from your college?

  • Is it close to shops and other amenities?

  • Are you close to friends?

External:

  • Does the property look in good condition?

  • Is parking available?

  • Is the property secure?

  • Where do you place your rubbish?

Internal:

  • Bedroom size and condition?

  • Does the room come fully furnished?

  • What is the bathroom like?

  • Is the living area clean?

  • What condition is the kitchen in?

  • Does the property have fire safety equipment?

  • What type of heating system is in place?

  • General condition of walls, floor for any dampness/dirt etc?

If you are searching for student accommodation in Dublin, do make sure to start early as demand is very high.

Great advice — starting your search early really makes a difference when it comes to finding good student housing! And after a long day of apartment hunting or studying, taking a break with a fun drawing game like Skribbl io can be the perfect way to relax and laugh with friends online.

For students who have rented before, what’s the one question you wish you had asked PolyTrack landlord before signing? I feel this checklist is great, but personal tips are invaluable too.
